Freed from limitations of words and thoughs, the spirit finds expression through the natural intellignece and rhythm of the body, and speaks its own sweet and pure language. Through movement we can express and experience, for example, the qualities of courage, steadfastness and constancy of playfulness, lightness and beauty.
Abhinaya is a form of dance that integrates body, mind and heart, and allows expresion and acknowledgement of the divine within us all. Through movement we discover the stillness that is the source of all activity.
"Where the hand goes, the eye goes. Where the eye goes, there the mind follows. Where the mind is, there the heart is also. Where the heart is, there love arises." This ancient Sanskrit verse indicates a direct line of attention through body, mind and heart, and reveals the point where the minds and hearts of dancer and onlooker are united.
Simple walking movements, foot rhythms, hand gestures, story dances, devotional dances and prayers are some of the elements that make up the rich expression through 'Abhinaya' as it is practised in the School. Those who participate invariably find it gives rise to the experience of deep peace and happiness.
